Weightclass

When you go out runnning, it is not recommendable to walk too long on shoes who are not made for this. It will cause injuries to the knees, lower back, Achilles tendon etc.

Every step you take as a runner means +/- 3 times your bodyweight as pressure on your muscles and joints. The knees get even more to endure, a pressure +/- 7 till 9 times your bodyweight. For this reason it is very important to be well captured. Beside a cushioning which decreases the pressure, it is significant to have a good stability which takes care of a good unwinding of the foot and which captures the pressure in a justified manner.

Not every runner unwinds totally neutral. More of 50% of all runners walk towards the inside (which is caused by the position of the ankle. They call this “anti-pronation”.

In this case the foot will have to be supported by a small strengthening used on the inner-side of the sole. If this is not the case, you will have a bigger chance of injuries (especially of the knees).

If you do not know your own way of walking, we recommend you to let it be tested by us. By way of a run course and a video capture, we are able to measure this very precisely.

Do you already have a runnershoe, but is it ready for replacement? It is easy to order fast a new one at our webshop. The cushioning of the shoe lasts about 1.200 km; if you have injuries quicker than someone else and/or you walk a lot on solid foundation, it is recommendable to switch to a new shoe after +/- 1.000 km. Most models are replaced by a succesor which has the same qualities, so you know absoluty sure that you order the right model.

When you do not know which model is the succesor of your current shoe, please send an e-mail with the name of the shoe to: info@athleticshop.nl and we will help you choosing a new one.

Brand differences

Asics

Asics delivers an excellent quality and offers a shoe for almost every runner, in the low as well as the high segment. This is why they leader on the market of running (70% of the entire market). We have been selling this brand for years now and have good experiences with it.

Adidas

The small last of Adidas will feel comfortable for the walker with a smaller forefoot (Pleasant surrounded heelcap) It is of great importance that a shoe surrounds the foot in a proper way to provide it with enough stability. Besides a solid Torsion (which takes care of stability), Adidas has a nice gentle cushioning (Adiprene). We have been selling Adidas for years too now and also this brand has proven its quality more than once.

Saucony

Saucony aims more for the heavier walkers (70 kilos and up) and also has shoes for a broader foot. These runnershoes have a solid sole which makes sure that the runner is catched right and stable. Beside the stability which is especially absorbed in the middle of the shoe, most models of Saucony are moderated in the frond and back of the shoe to decrease the pressure on the muscles and hinges.

Nike

Because Nike works with an Aircushioning (a gas filled unit in the sole of the shoe), the models have a very soft cushioning. That is why the models of Nike are specially suited for the lighter weightclass (+/- up to 65 kilo). They also have a smaller last and are perfect for people with a small forefoot.

Ladies / Gentlemen

The principal difference between ladies and gentlemen is in the fit. The models for ladies are smaller in the last and flatter on the instep. This is because ladies have more often a smaller forefoot than gentlemen. The shoes for men are usually more stabilised because of the weightclass.

Walking styles

Your walking style is determined by the position of the ankle. Changing your walking style with exercises is therefore not possible. It is possible, with the assistance of the right shoe, to make sure that your foot will be supported on the places where needed. This makes it possible for every runner to unwind correctly.

There are three different walking styles, these are:

a) Anti-Pronation

Just like with pronation, you start with anti-pronation on the outside of the heel. Now you do not go directly to the big toe, but you unwind too fast towards the inside of the shoe. Like this you will stand a little to the inside (think of a light form of X-legs). Especially your knees are pressured in a wrong way which makes it easy for injuries to occur faster. With support on the inside of the sole it is possible to support in such a way that you will unwind neutrally, which is called pronation.

b) Pronation (Neutral)

In this case you unwind totally neutral. This means you start on the outside of the heel and end at the big toe. Like this the entire sole is used and you unwind diagonal, which makes sure you have the least pressure on your knees and hinges.

c) Supination

Not very often we meet someone who supinates. This walking-style makes you unwind on the entire outside of the foot. It makes you stand a little bit towards the outside. There is not a wrong pressure in this case, so support with a special sole is not necesarry. People who supinate can easily walk on neutral shoes. But be careful! This has to be a flexible shoe which makes you keep on supinating.

3 different running styles

Weight class

An important principle is that every runner is different. That is why we also take a look at the different weightclasses beside the last and walking-styles. Someone of 60 kg will need less stability than someone of 90 kg. Every shoe has its own weight class. Like this everyone has a suitable shoe to run with, but also has enough cushioning and stability.

Stability is of great importance to prevent injuries !!!
